National Trust, Divis and Black Mountain

Kerrie Hanna x National Trust x YeHa Youth Project 2024

Above is the co-designed stained glass panel created with young people from the YeHa Youth Project, commissioned by the National Trust.

This project connected local teenagers with Divis and Black Mountain for the first time. We went on a guided foraging walk on Divis Mountain, learning more about the flora and fauna which can be found there, before creating visual studies onsite, taking time to explore the rich variety of life there.

From there, we worked together to collage a range of different designs from participants. The final design is curated in a way to echo the route we took on our foraging walk. The sketches created by participants were combined into a single composition that echoes the path of our walk.

Once the design was complete, the participants learned traditional stained glass painting techniques, contributing directly to the final piece. Now on permanent display at the Divis and Black Mountain Visitor Centre, the panel stands as a vibrant reflection of shared experience, nature connection, and creative collaboration between art, land, and community.
